Beginners guide: Playing Among US

What is Among Us?

    Among us is an online multiplayer game of 4-10 people. It is a space themed game, where players are given one of two roles: 

•   Crewmate
•   Impostor         

    

Crewmate

    As a crewmate your main goal is to stay alive, complete all your given tasks, and eliminate the impostor before the player kills everyone. If everyone completes their tasks or figure who the impostor is, crewmates win.

    

    All crewmates in the game are responsible for completing their tasks. Tasks are nothing complicated, they could range from just pulling a lever to empty trash, to swiping an id card. Depending on the the lobby you could be given long, short, or common tasks; the lobby host decides how many tasks they want to assign. There is a green bar at the top left of the screen that shows the total tasks completed of all the crewmates; if all the tasks are completed before the impostor kills everyone, you win.

 

    There are some unique tasks that can show players that you are not the impostor. This is important because only crewmates can complete tasks and impostors can not.  For example, there is a task where you can scan your self. This shows other players around that you are a Crewmate and not an impostor. 

Impostor

    Depending on the lobby there can either be 1 - 3 impostors. The main goal as an impostor is to kill all the crewmates before getting caught or before the crewmates finish their task. Although, you can not do tasks, you are given a fake task list. If you stand around doing nothing other players might get suspicious, so these fake tasks are there to help you pretend you are doing something. As an impostor you are able to kill, sabotage, or vent.

Killing

    As an impostor you are given the ability to kill another player when you are near them. Every time the game starts, a meeting among the players is over,  or after you kill someone, there is a cool down. Depending on the lobby you might have a short  or long cool down. Some things to keep in mind when killing someone:

• Make sure no one sees you
• Make sure you are not seen last with the person
• Have an alibi ready

Sabotage

    You are also given the ability to Sabotage. What this means is you are able to close doors in certain areas of the map, this can help you separate the crew or stop them from finding a body. You can also turn off the lights and all crew member's view distance will shrink, unless someone fixes the lights. You can also turn off the reactor or oxygen which are vital to crewmembers. If the reactor or oxygen are turned off, it requires two crewmates to to do a task at the same time but in different locations. This can create perfect scenarios for an impostor to kill with little suspicion.  

Venting

    The third ability an impostor can do is go through vents. There are vents around the map that offer a network of fast travel. This means an impostor can kill someone and vent to a different location. One thing to keep in mind is figuring out when to vent, others might see you and call it out.

Meeting with Players

         

    Throughout the game you are not allowed to communicate with other players. You are only allowed to communicate when someone reports a body or someone calls an emergency meeting. When a player is near a dead body, a report button pops out that allows you to call a meeting. When a player sees something suspicious they are able to press a red button available in all the maps. 

Meetings

    Communication is done in a chat box that is available to everyone, the dead players can send a message but is not visible to the players alive. Some important tactics you can do during a meeting as either a crewmember or impostor are: 

• Get everyone's last location to figure who was the closest to the dead body, if any. This could determine whether some players are most or least likely to be an impostor.
• Ask where the dead boy was found, question the player who found the body. A common tactic among impostors is self reporting.  This can also be used to accuse the player who reported the dead body.
• Many players usually state what they were doing before the meeting to clear their name, this can be a double edge sword. If your alibi is not concrete, other players might accuse you of being an impostor and an impostor might fuel that accusation.
• Look out for players not saying anything, they are usually hiding something.

Voting

    Once everyone is finish discussing details in the chat. Everyone has the option to vote someone out, if not enough information is given out then it is okay to skip the vote. At the same time you can't trust all the information given out in the chat. When everyone is in agreement to vote someone out, two things can happen: you vote someone innocent or you vote out the impostor.
