Manga: is also known as comics or graphic novels originated in Japan, which include a
wide variety of genres. Some of them are targeting a certain audience like teens, adults,
boys, and girls etc. Manga is unique by its art and the order in which should be read. Its art
doesn’t include colors it’s just black and white. The way in which manga should be read it is
from right to left.

Webtoon: Also known as manhwa(manhua) is a colored digital comic originated in South
Korea, back in time this type of comic wasn’t that popular, but through time their
popularity has been increasing little by little with the help of smartphones. Nowadays
manhwa is not only based in South Korea because of its wide range, allowing people around
the world to create their own manhwa. Manhwa should be
read from right to left as a normal book.

Step 1: Decide your ideal genre. You need to choose a genre for a better experience and that
you enjoy the most so that the reading it’s not tiresome or boring. The genres in manga and
webtoons where you can choose are:
- Yaoi: Also known as Boys Love or BL is a genre of fictional media
- originating in Japan that features homosexual relationships between male characters. Most of the time this manga/ webtoons are created by women targeting women. It can also be written by male authors and the readers also include males.
- Romance: Depicting strong and close romantic love and its complications. As
jealousy, marriage, divorce, betrayal, and heartache.
- School life: Showcase of events that occur on a daily basis in a school, whether from the perspective of a student or of a teacher. This includes having fun in classroom attending school clubs, spending time with friends or doing chores which sometimes include other genres depending of the author.
- Martial Arts: These types of comics are based on the different styles of martial arts. They are collected from atrial films.
- Adventure: In this genre the characters embark on a journey to explore the world or in search of something. The characters reach to new places where they find their friends, new people in which any times they have an enemy in common in which all of them attack. Also along the way they show their powers, weakness and strengths, but those are revealed little by little.
- Mature: This manga is not allowed to be viewed by anyone who is under the age of 18. This genre may contain acts of violence, gore, scenes of nudity, excessive swearing or a sexualized content.
- Slice of life: This manga happens to aim to keep the plot as realistic as possible. It ay features talk of first world problems or interests, like in Lucky star.
- Shotacon: Represents a sexual attraction toward young or underage boys.
- Shouju: Is known as being focused, mainly, towards a female audience with it’s romantic plot lines and characters developments.
- Smut: Deals with a large amount of sexual content that may be considered offensive for some viewers.
- Yuri: Intimidate or explicit relationship between two woman.
- Bara: Is similar to Yaoi and depicts homosexual relationships between men, but these mangas/webtoons are written by male authors, making its art different because the style is burly, muscular or hairy.
- Action: Involves scenes of violence, fighting, and general chaos.
- Doujinshi: Fan based work inspired by an existing anime or manga.
- Fantasy: Work that involves magic, dream worlds, magical creatures, and others.
- Mystery: Usually involves a plot where the main protagonist has to solve something unexplainable.
- Shoujo Ai: is known as “Girls Love”. This shows a light romantic relationship between two women.
- Harem: The protagonist will be surrounded by a group of the opposite gender. This includes the possibility that multiple romantic interest may occur.
- Mecha: Work revolving around large robotics.
- Sports: Any sport which can’t go under Martial Arts genre will go under this sub-genre. Such as Prince of tennis and Kuroko no Basket.
- Ecchi: A genre featuring playful, tongue-in-cheek usage of sexualized imagery and situations such as double flirtation, while remaining non-pornographic.
- Drama: This type of genre tends to involve plot twists after plot twist. This is used to entertain, shock, and thrill.
- Josei: This is translated as meaning “Woman”. Aims at a female audience from 18-30, but it’s not shoujo anime/manga. It’s realistic rather than ideal and can involve mature andexplicit scenes or plot.
- Shounen Ai: Shows a light, romantic relationship between two men.
- Comedy: Often dramatic light hearted and fast paced work, intending to humor. Some circumstances ay deem the work as sarcastic.
- Supernatural: Anything unexplainable which defies the laws of physics, even within the anime/manga world it is featured in.
- Historical: Work is set in an old or ancient time of any possible era.
- Physiological: Tends to deal with the philosophy of someone’s state of mind like in Death Note.
- Gender Bender: The main character may, for whatever reason or purpose, gender swap. From male to female or female to male for a period of time.
- Horror/thriller: Work is either frightening and/or shocking.
- Sci-fi: Science fiction happens to involve a mixture of science and technology. It may be inspired by modern day knowledge or a farfetched notion.
- Tragedy: Events which show large amounts of misfortunes and/or loss. Which include the main character’s death.
- Shounen: This genre aims to please a young male audience with some violence and fighting amongst the plot.
- Seinen: Meaning “Young Man”, aims to a male audience aged between 18-25.
Step 2: Find and understand the rating system. The rating system is really important
because each manga/webtoon is created in a way that is not inappropriate for underage
people. (Note: Don’t violate the rating system. If you don’t follow the rating system based
on your age you might find inappropriate content that might cause discomfort and
trauma).In an actual comic book you can find its rating in the back, front, or inside of the
book and in most of the webtoons sometimes is on the overview, or the author places one of
the ratings besides the episode number or the author starts with a warning in the beginning
of the episode.
A-All Ages
Y- Youth 10+
T- Teen 13+
OT- Older teen 16+
M or A-(Mature 18+)
Sometimes you won’t see the letters of rating but you will see the age with a plus sign
which means that people under that age is not supposed to read those episodes or manga.

Step 3: Search manga/webtoon reviews online based on the manga/weebtoon that you have
chosen so that your first time experience is much better and decide if it’s worth to read.

Step 4: Find apps and websites where you can read manga/webtoons free. If you are the
type of person who likes to have an actual book, look for stores that offers you manga.
Some apps and websites where you can find webtoons and manga are:
-Webtoons(app) It’s totally free and has a great rating system. People who can have this
app must be 12+ years or older.
-Webcomics(app)- It’s free, but in order to read new chapters you have to get coins and
gems which you can get by doing some activities like: watching 5 videos per day (20 coins
per video), reading for more than 40 minutes(30 coins), online timespan(10 coins), specific
period(30 coins) and spin lucky wheel (you can get reading as many chapters you want for 1
or 3 days free, get 10,20,30,100 coins). To get gems you have to download games, and
apps.

Step 5: Read the synopsis or summary. When choosing a manga and a webtoon it’s
important to know what the story is about. Many times the first sentence catches your
attention and that’s how you know that you are going to enjoy it.
